On this day, 34 years ago, Harvey Milk was murdered by Dan White. Milk left us (yes, us, people of the world) the most important legacy of all time: hope.
Harvey Milk died way too soon, at the age of 48, he did everything in his power in order to change the world, and most importantly, change the close minded. Those people are the ones that should be closeted, not anyone else.
Like Harvey Milk once, so beautifully, said: I cannot prevent anyone from getting angry, or mad, or frustrated. I can only hope that they’ll turn that anger and frustration and madness into something positive, so that two, three, four, five hundred will step forward, so the gay doctors will come out, the gay lawyers, the gay judges, gay bankers, gay architects … I hope that every professional gay will say ‘enough’, come forward and tell everybody, wear a sign, let the world know. Maybe that will help.
Think about it, maybe that will help, maybe being free will help, maybe respecting one another will help.
My name is Rita Sebastião and I just want you to respect everyone, whether they’re like you or not, just respect them.
Today, I celebrate the life of Harvey Milk and everything he ever did to improve this world, tomorrow, I’ll do everything I can to improve this world. I hope I can be as majestic and as fantastic and as inspirational to litte kids as you were to me, Harvey. The words are few, the only thing I can do is fight, fight as hard as your did, love as hard as you did, and hope, hope as much as you did. Because hope will never be silent.
I know that you cannot live on hope alone, but without it, life is not worth living. And you…And you…And you…Gotta give them hope.
